Woman wearing fall trench coat and a Sydney duncan scarf as a hat.

With chilly winds and cozy layers becoming part of your daily routine, your square scarf is the perfect accessory to elevate your fall and winter wardrobe. From a chic turban to a stylish over-the-shoulder sash, there’s no shortage of ways to transform your scarf into a fashionable staple.

Here are 10 versatile ways to style your square scarf this season, keeping you warm and trendy. Whether you’re using a 45cm, 65cm, or 90cm scarf, these looks will help you make the most of your fall and winter outfits.

Are Square Scarves Even Still in Style?

While the square scarf (or silk scarf)'s popularity has fluctuated with time, it has never truly been out of style. In fact, as the popularity of vintage clothing has snowballed in recent years, scarf looks of all varieties have become more and more in demand. The 2020s especially have seen an incredible resurgence of the trend, most excitingly in the realm of street style fashion. RnB power couple and fashion icons Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, for instance, have been particularly stylish representation of the trend's contemporary interpretation (no surprise there).

We're living in a sort of style renaissance, no longer tightly constrained by the norms of what is "current", and free pull from every decade before us as inspiration, refining those styles into something new and exciting!

How to Wear a Square Scarf

With its limitless possibilities, this versatile piece of fabric can be worn in countless ways. To ease back on the overwhelm, I've narrowed the list down to my current 10 favorite styles.

Pillbox Hat Style

(65cm Scarf)

The turban is a bold, fashion-forward choice that not only makes a statement but also protects your head from cold weather. Perfect for adding a pop of color or print to your outerwear.

How to Tie:

  1. Start with a 45cm square scarf and fold it into a triangle.

  2. Place the folded edge at the nape of your neck and bring the two ends to the front.

  3. Twist the ends over each other at your forehead and tie into loose double know, so that long ends sit like a loose bow.

  4. Take the loose trangle point that remains at the front and tuck in.

This is a great option for protecting your hair from harsh winds, while keeping your look fashionable.

Over the Shoulder Sash

(90cm Scarf)

For an elegant touch, drape your scarf over your shoulders and tie it into a sash. This style is ideal for evening events or winter parties.

How to Style:

  1. Take your 90cm scarf and fold it into a triangle.

  2. Drape the widest part of the triangle over one shoulder and let the ends fall across your body.

  3. Tie the ends in a small knot at your side or secure them with a brooch.

This look adds a glamorous element to your outfit, perfect for formal winter gatherings.

Scarf Top Layered Over Blouse or Sweater

(90cm or 65cm Scarf)

How to Style:

  1. Fold the scarf diagonally, into a large triangle.

  2. Place folded edge above breasts and let long end drape over belly.

  3. Keeping shoulders rolled back and posture straight, tie (or have somebody else tie) scarf tightly at back between(ish) shoulder blades.

This pairing works well with both 65cm and 90cm scarves, adding texture and warmth without bulk.
